Abrisz Point:
  1. The POint at which maximum spark is achieved from a Magneto

ABS:
  1. Anti-lock Braking System

AFFA:
  1. Angels Forever Forever Angels. xFFx is a common form showing loyalty to a given riding club. In this case, Hells Angels.

Aftermarket:
  1. The manufacturers and retailers (other than the OEM) who sell accessories and parts for your Motorcycle.
  2. Parts and accessories made by anyone other than the OEM.

Air:
  1. 80% nitrogen, 19% oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and minor trace elements. Reasonably important to combustion and also useful for air cooling.

Air Cooling:
  1. Design used to keep an engine at operating temperature using Air flow over fins designed to disperse heat directly from the engine to the surrounding air

Air-Fuel Ratio:
  1. The mixture of Air to fuel produced by the fuel metering system. A comparison between the amount of air and amount of fuel going into the combustion chamber. Coarsely important to keep the machine running. Finely impartant for trade-off between POwer and economy.

Airhead:
  1. A BMW that is mostly cooled by Air rather than by water or oil.
  2. A major BMW club.

Air Intake:
  1. Intuitively enough, the place the Air goes into the fuel metering system. On natually asperated engines, this areas is under vacuum so long as the engine is running. This can be used to trigger a vacuum actuated petcock.

Air Intake Valve:
  1. In a 2-cycle engine, a reed Valve that prevents backpressure from going back out of the intake.
  2. In a 4-cycle engine, a cam-actuated Valve that opens and closes at precisely the correct time to bring in clean Air and never let used air back out.

Air Lock:
  1. Similar to vapor lock. A POcket of Air develops that block normal flow of a fluid, such as in a hydraulic brake line. Common in two stroke engines when the oil injection system runs dry

AirTex:
  1. Mesh-like, highly tear-resistant Dynafil POlyamide weave.

All the Gear All the Time:
  1. A safety attitude which states that protective gear should always be worn, no matter what the weather, distance to ride, or peer pressure endured

Allen Key:
  1. Allen Wrench

Allen Wrench:
  1. A small wrench formed by a hexagonal piece of bar-stock bent into an L-shape. Used to drive Socket Cap Bolts. Because of the small size of the allen wrench, sockt cap bolts are often used in places that would be very inconveieent or impossible to fit a conventional box end or socket wrench.

Alloy:
  1. A solid or homogenous solution that is a mixture of two or more metals to create a combined metal with better characteristics for a special purpose

Altitudinal Change:
  1. The change in combustion mixture when changing altitude. More of an issue with older bikes using slide carbs.

American Machine and Foundry:
  1. Better knows for ten pin bowling alleys. Owned Harley Davidson between 1969 and 1981. Made some of the worst Motorcycles ever. Even Triumph (in the same era) couldn't compete with their POor quality control.

Amp:
  1. Ampere

Ampere:
  1. The unit of measurement of current

Anchor:
  1. Brakes

Anti-lock Braking System:
  1. As in a car, a system to prevent a skid. Generally, this is accomplished through a rapid automatic catch-and-release of the brake while you are holding it mashed on. ABS causes the tank-tread looking skid marks that you sometimes see on the interstate.

Anti-seize:
  1. A greasy paste added to bolt threads to keep them from getting stuck

Ape Hangers:
  1. Very high hindlebars. Generally found on choppers.

Armor:
  1. Protective Gear
  2. Often removable plastic, foam, or rubber pads in strategic locations in your protective gear.

ATE:
  1. Made the first disc brake for BMW in 1974 with the /6 series. They were well know for not working well. In fact, the single disc did not work nearly as well as the former drum brake of the /5 series.
